MARTINI: Innovation in Preventive Maintenance of Tunnels

por Julian

Transport networks in the Basque Country, Spain, and Europe are highly developed but aging and require maintenance. In this context, MARTINI emerges as a key solution to manage transport infrastructure assets, particularly tunnels, which require increased maintenance.

MARTINI is an innovation project driven and co-funded by the HAZITEK program of SPRI-Basque Government and the PID program of CDTI, with participation from COMSA and Fulcrum. It also involves collaboration with Tecnalia and the support of ETS (Euskal Trenbide Sarea – Basque Railway Network). The project focuses on creating an artificial intelligence platform tailored to railway tunnels to detect and assess structural damage in real-time, ensuring infrastructure safety and efficiency, and based on digital twinning.

This platform will enable the identification and evaluation of pathologies using SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) algorithms based on fiber optics and through adapted extended reality devices, offering a comprehensive solution for preventive and predictive tunnel maintenance. The project not only promises to revolutionise transport infrastructure management but also to open new opportunities in AI applied to civil engineering.

The development of MARTINI will be validated in railway tunnels, although it would be applicable to tunnels of any type and other critical structural assets.

Advancing preventive and predictive maintenance of infrastructure through early detection and monitoring of structural pathologies, while optimizing resources, helps improve safety and accident prevention.
