The Smart Maintenance Working Group is drafting a document on the sector’s capabilities

SMART MAINTENANCE IS BECOMING AN INCREASINGLY UPWARD TREND IN THE RAILWAY SECTOR BOTH IN SPAIN AND EUROPE.

Smart Maintenance focuses on using advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Cloud Computing, etc. in order to prevent possible equipment failures before they occur.

The implementation of smart maintenance has a great impact on the efficiency of the railway sector. By preventing failures, downtime and repair costs are reduced, improving equipment availability and reliability, as well as helping to extend equipment life and reducing environmental impact.

Given this growing trend both at Spanish and European level, since the beginning of 2022, Mafex has a Working Group focused on this theme, led by the company Thales and in which 18 member companies participate.

Among the tasks carried out in the WG is the analysis of the challenges linked to Smart Maintenance. This is an analysis based on 9 key technologies in the Rolling Stock, Signalling and Infrastructure segments. As a result of this work, the members of the group are working on the preparation of a document that reflects the challenges that the sector faces in this area, in addition to the solutions present in the Spanish railway industry companies.
