The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have gained in the last two decades a remarkable importance in urban transport networks. The Automatic Vehicle Location systems (SAE), the Passenger Information Systems (PIS) and the Ticketing systems could be said to be the three fundamental pillars of an ITS for urban public transport, both in bus and rail.
These systems can be deployed independently and each of them provides great value on its own, but it is when they are deployed in an integrated manner that they really increase their contribution to improving the quality of the transport service.
